New Gowanus Toxic Plume

First published December 5th. 2024

We have repeatedly asked NY State DEC to do a better job of community outreach. Nevertheless we can share that chlorinated volatile organic compounds (CVOCs) were found near the corner of Court and Luquer Streets and DEC has opened a plume track-down to identify the source of the contamination. They've been taking soil samples, installing more groundwater monitoring wells and have contacted nearby property owners to offer indoor air and sub-slab (under buildings) testing.

What we've been calling attention to -the widespread toxicity of the land in Gowanus, is becoming clearer as more hotspots are discovered. Groundwater is shown to spread the contamination which can then seep into indoor air
